Pineapple Yoga KAUAI...

Aloha and Happy 2011! Pineapple Yoga is off to an amazing start this year with a new teacher, strong attendance and many exciting things to come...

Welcome Shelley!

Shelley Smith joined Eagle teaching morning mysore at Pineapple Yoga Kauai this past October. Now we have two perspectives and four hands to serve our growing sangha! Shelley brings 12 years of yoga experience and a fresh female viewpoint to Pineapple Yoga, and her sweet, gentle and powerful energy is a welcome addition to our community.

Along with a love of practice and teaching Ashtanga Yoga, Shelley has a great passion for food. She shares her adventures living, eating, and wandering the world through yoga, travel and food writing. You can follow her daily vegan food blog at myfoodevolution.blogspot.com.

Shelley is also available for private yoga instruction. Contact her directly to schedule a session or with other inquiries at: Shelley@PineappleYoga.com and view her BIO page.

Keeping the Flow...

We have a lot of new students in the room these days... and plenty of seasoned ashtangis too. We're friends, we're family, we're a community here at Pineapple Yoga. We love that! Let's keep the experience here open, comfortable, happy and fun, while also maintaining the respect and serious dedication a yoga school deserves.

Here are a few guidelines on our yoga shala etiquette:

SACRED SPACE. Greetings and hugs are welcome here! Just keep in mind that we all come in and out of the space at different times, so it's important to be mindful and not disrupt other students while they are engaged in their practice. Please hold our practice room as a sacred space: enter, exit, and interact within the room quietly and respectfully, creating a peaceful atmosphere where we can connect with the divinity within.

PHYSICAL SPACE. Honor yourself, each other, and our practice environment by making sure your body, clothes, mat and rug are clean before each practice. Place your mats and belongings in a way that will allow for others to fit in the room. Leave no trace: wipe up any sweat puddles, pick up stray flower or mat pieces, and if you use the toilet, flush it. Please do not get up from your practice to adjust the windows in the room; instead, attempt to choose clothing that will keep you warm or cool enough throughout your practice. Let's appreciate and enjoy our beautiful shala space each day!

TIMING. Practice at Pineapple Yoga is from 7:30 to 9:30 each morning, except our rest days on Sunday and the new and full moon days each month. Please arrive and begin your practice in a timely manner which allows you to enjoy your full practice, finishing sequence, and savasana without rushing. Finishing postures should begin by 9:15. At 9:30 we will open windows and begin cleaning the room for the next users.

RESPECT THE METHOD. Our daily Ashtanga Yoga practice consists of a set sequence of asanas performed in a specific order connected with correct breathing system and drishti. These postures are traditionally given by a teacher to a student one by one, as the student is ready. In order to obtain the full benefits of this practice it is important to honor the method and your teacher by doing your practice correctly and consistently! If you have concerns, pain, or an injury which requires modifications, just ask and we will be happy to help you modify your practice safely and appropriately when needed. Otherwise, please do your best to maintain your full practice each day as it was taught to you... Practice, practice, practice and all is coming!

Yoga Stops Traffick: A Global Event to End Human Trafficking.

On Saturday, March 12th, we will be joining our global yoga community in holding a special class to benefit Odanadi Seva Trust, a charity based in Mysore, India where we study Ashtanga Yoga. Odanadi is providing rescue, rehabilitation, and reintegration for the survivors of human trafficking, sexual exploitation, slavery, domestic abuse and destitution. Please join us as we dedicate our morning sun salutations to raising awareness for this important cause and accept donations of any amount... what seems like a little to us goes a long way in India and every penny will help support Odanadi's work.

Mahalo to Our Pujari!

"Let the beauty of what you love be what you do." -Rumi

Aloha, Mahalo and Happy Birthday to Pineapple Yoga's honorary "Pujari", brother Kamran!!!

The path of Ashtanga Yoga was introduced to Kamran by his dear friends Olaf Kalfas, Nina Kalfas, Anthony "Prem" Carlisi, Heather "Radha" Duplex and of course in the neighborhood with Eagle and Shelley. We are all blessed daily with a freshly saged mysore room and the freshest Kauai flower blooms, peppers & fruits, set with intention on our Sri K. Pattabhi Jois altar in respect and gratitude. The entire Pineapple Yoga community appreciates you Kamran, your 6 day a week devotion, your offerings, kindness and care. Thank you! It is truly felt by all.

In addition to practicing Ashtanga Yoga and sporting a love affair for a healthy garden, Kamran hosts two radio shows each week on Kauai's Community Radio, KKCR. His OASIS SUNDAY radio show is on from 10am until noon, and his GARDEN SHOW is on Wednesday at Noon. You can easily tune in and listen to Kauai's very special local community radio by visiting the KKCR website; click here to enjoy Kamran, Hawaiian music shows and the many great volunteers that host a wide variety of shows: (http://www.KKCR.org).

Mahalo Kamran for all the care and devotion to yourself, to Kauai and the Pineapple Yoga Ohana... Viva la gardener... viva la poet... viva la ashtangi!
